OK, I think I understand, he had the transfer case in neutral, and tried to put the tranny back into park? The park pawl is at the rear of the tranny, the shifter at the front. There is a linkage from front to back. I think pulling the pan may enable you to see the problem, hope it's the linkage, since I think you can remove it without even pulling the valve body. The cog wheel would need to dissasemble the tranny for repair, or maybe just the rear housing?
