Do a cylinder balance test. Simple, just un plug the coil wire, and crank it. Listen for rhythm. All cyls should sound alike, wum-wum-wum-wum-wum. wum-wum-erk-wum-wum means a bad one. If so, check compression. You may also see a puff of oil out the dipstick at the -erk-.
Certainly check the crank vent system, I've fixed a couple clunkers that way too.
