When the Jeep, "7 slot grill lawsuit" between gm Hummer and Chrysler resulted in the breakup of New Venture gear (a joint effort between the New Process Division of Chrysler and gm's Muncie/Allison) it torpedoed the efforts by Chrysler to use the Allison automatic transmission behind the Cummins, how sweet that would have been!
With several Mercedes HD automatics available It'd be hard to explain why D/C would go outside the corporation to CAT for a new trans. Although stranger things have happened, such as the Cummins engine itself when Chryslers' own divisions produce the Detroit and Mercedes diesels.
If you have a link or web site to quote I'd be interested in pursueing this rumor, in fact I think that a forum member from here or DodgeSweptline.org works at CAT, I'd certainly like to receive an anonymous e-mail with more info...= )
The manual trans deal with Getrag, a german company, may get more interesting also as some of the major components for Getrag are provided by Dana. Because of the bankruptcy reorganization of Dana, we may see the name of many of the players change and maybe even products discontinued or consolidated. Why, when Chrysler owns New Venture, would the NV5600 be replaced by an outside vendor??? There is a lot going on here that has more to do with german bean counters than with American car guys.....
