Rings are actually lapped flat, to within umm...millionths of an inch. I don't think they would bother if they had .005 clearance.

The only part of a car thats is any flatter is the ceramic seal used in the AC compressor- it is two parts so flat the an oil film seals in 200 psi freon, and leaks less that 1/2 oz per year.
