I had read that Hall Scott tried some diesel engines but they never really marketed them to the public suscessfully. They were the die hard gas engine people. Their engines produced great power and I read somewhere some gas engines went 1 million miles. They however did not have any kind of MPG which was something diesels were starting to win over the public with. I got a book around here somewhere that talks about Hall Scott and its history. I'll have to dig it up and check thru it again.
