I'll give this a go.
The reason guys take a tough old beast and re-power, re-gear, add a
functional radio, power steering etc. besides the creative impulse, is
the fact that the manufacturers have left a big gap. The old iron is
tough and appealing to nuts like us but not so practical on modern roads.
The new stuff is practical on modern roads but not so tough and not so
appealing to nuts.
We nuts want both. Both in one.
What could be better than to have that satisfaction and to be able to say
"I built it."
This is not to say that we don't appreciate a nicely restored original. We do.
