My diesel M37 has 125 hp (intercooled 3.7L Hercules) and the temperature maxes out at ~195 degrees. Remember, for a typical efficient direct injection diesel, water cooled, water jacket heat rejection, power output and heat loss through exhaust heat are all about equal. For an old inefficient low compression water cooled gas engine like the flathead, it's about 20% power, 40% water jacket waste heat, and 40% exhaust heat. So since the flathead is maximum about 90 hp, its' heat rejection to the radiator is equivalent to an efficient 180 hp direct injection turbo diesel, about equivalent to a 6 cyl 5.9L typical Perkins/Cummins etc rated at about 180 hp. You will have trouble fitting an engine of that power output in one of these trucks due to size considerations. The only ones I can think of that could conceivably fit would be a V8 (6.5, 170hp NA, hard to fit w/ turbo) or 6.9/7.3, 180 hp NA) or a V6 ToroFlo (478 ci). Any conceivable souped up 4 cyl could be handled by the radiator; a 4BTA with all of Banks' soup-up parts for the 6BT might barely go past the limit at 200 hp and 450 ft-lb.
What kind of engine and transmission are you considering?
Charlie
