Well, I've only had broken ones to remove, so I haven't had to be too gentle with them.

If I was faced with it as a problem I'd just drill it out through the access hole. You can't use a gas torch on it, as the alloy would melt.

Be aware that the small square drive bar will stick in the inner mechanism as well, and that if you try to lever the lock out it will just leave the square drive behind. I have the remnants of two that someone has learned this on.

From memory if you drill out the grubscrew,(assuming it just wont play at all) you then have to undo the four screws holding the latch mechanism to the door and the three that mount the inner latch, and this will give you enough play to pull the lock part way out and pry the square drive out of the inner lock with no damage.

Please not that the best time to do all of this is when you have the window out, so you can fit and remove all the latch and lock sections with maximum access.

Anyone asked VPW if they will sell you a key ??

Gordon
