Yes, the 3053A comes from M35s. They are abundant and inexpensive because there has been a SLEP (Service Life Extension Program) for M35s, either 2 for 1 or 3 for 2, i.e. the rebuilder takes some old trucks and produces less new-like trucks, ending up with a big pile of parts. I've seen two figures for the ratio: 0.85:1 from Boyce, and 0.79:1 in some manuals at the local Army National Guard shop.
The main problems with the 3053A are length (16.5") and SAE#3 bellhousing requirement. A 3-53 is short enough and can be easily set up with a SAE#3. So can a Perkins or Cummins.
