Looking at the dif cover from behind, the 8 3/8 is a sideways oval: fairly flat on the top and bottom, and with the same curve on both ends. The 9 1/4 is LARGER by quite a bit, comes to a blunt point on the bottom, and is asymetrical side to side ( looks like a Dana cover that somebody stepped on and kinked the top and bottom out) The brake drums on the 9 1/4 are also larger, and fill the back of the wheel up almost to the rim while the 8 3/8 drums have some clear space around the outside. When looking at a "parts"unit, make sure to check for a limited slip dif, and find out what the ratio is while your under there. Happy Parts Hunting JVL
