I have yet to try that with my M101. Partly it's because I got a real nice straight trailer and don't want to scruff it up by using it for rocks and dirt. Maybe for firewood, but it doesn't have any side boards. Anyway, I too would probably try replacing the bolts with pins. The only problem would be if it rattled around and wore the holes out. On mine, you can't really chain the tailgate horizontal. The hooks don't work right and the chain length is a little off. I can chain the M105s horizontal just fine. I wish they had the dump feature like the M101s do, since I have quite a few M105s and all but one is pretty scruffy.
