Camshaft Removal and Replacement

Looking for advice, comments and tips on the removal and replacement of the cam shaft in my 230 in the M56. Do I need a special tool to remove the shaft? I know that I'll have to hold the valves up, I remember seeing a photo of it being done with clothespins. Also is camshaft lube a necessity, or will Vaseline work just as well? Old wives tales welcome as well as experienced anecdotes! Thanks! Judy
