Vaughn,

I'll test tomorrow to see if I can hear the noise at a stand still to determine if it occurs only under load or not. That may add to the knowledge base. I do have a new set of valve springs if that turns out to be the issue. Understand that I flushed the oil passages during the quasi-rebuild 10,000 miles ago, not recently.

I'm not an expert on the relation of the points to the advance and fuel mixture, but I also ran it rich while the timing was advanced. The combination left substantial carbon on top of the pistons. The engine performs quite well with advanced timing and a rich mixture (imagine that). Though it does lead to some other problems. I have since reduced both, with a loss of performance as the result.
