RWR:

I am so sorry to hear of your troubles with your D. It hits a sore spot. 1st off, the steale, er dealer is sellin a sack of crap! DC's policy is to blame the owner where ever and when ever possible (I guess most American car companies are like that). DC also tries to deny any issues with faulty parts, ie; ball joints.

From what you described, I would have thought a linkage issue myself, and yes, driving in 4WD on dry roads will really screw ya up and break stuff. The 99 D has mechanical linkage as opposed to electronic (which IMO, SUCKS).

I think you were screwed from the get go. For $1400, you coulda had the whole damn tranny rebuilt. Next mistake, going to the steale, er dealer unless you have a warranty. They no longer employ mechanics, but technicians. Remove and replace people. For the most part can't even spit unless told to do so.

If ya can, find a local, reputable trans shop (not AAMCO) to take and get your D fixed. Also find a local, reputable mechanic for any future repairs, or learn how to do em yourself. IMHO, the 99 is the best built of all the Gen 1 Durangos. DC was almost in complete charge of Dodge by the 2000 model year and really started to cut costs and quality of the D then.

Good Luck
Ugg
