braking with stock shoes should not be horrible if they are correctly installed. adjustment is not like later drum systems. It MUST be done they way the book says. another issue sometimes with hard stopping is the type of lining on the shoes you have. Some are way too hard and won't stop the truck effectively. mos the time I run into hard stopping it is related to poor adjustment, or bad brake hoses
