If it's real badly jerry-rigged, it might be better to just start over with all-new wiring, at least for everything that goes to the dash. My 65 D200 is also a rats nest of jerry-rigged stuff, broken gages, burned out wires, stuff added on and cut off, etc. I haven't put much time into it, but I know if I want it to do anything more than drive around (i.e. if I want gages and lights to work), I'm going to have to re-do it all. Who knows where the wire you hooked to the "start" position actually went. It might have gone somewhere totally unexpected or the insulation might have rubbed through and shorted it to the body somewhere or maybe somebody tapped some "extra" into it and either did it wrong, or left a dangling wire or bare splice that shorted out. There's pretty much an infinite number of possibilities and I expect you'll learn a good bit about electrical troubleshooting before you're through.
