The PW and M37 trans bolt patterns are not always the same.

The early m37s have a NP420 trans with a bolt pattern that matches the old WWII WC 3/4 ton and ff PW with the crash boxes (up to '56) The ff PW 420 will not bolt up to the early M37s nor the early ff PWs. I know I just transferred all the guts from my ff PW NP420 trans into an early M37 NP420 transmission case. That way I could bolt a NP420 trans into my ff PW without having to replace the bell housing and all the work that that would entail. It makes sense that the military would keep the same trans bolt pattern on the M37 as WC had as the WCs were still in service and they could just grab a trans and stuff it into a truck. Much easier than keeping multiple trans in stock for specific trucks.

I understand that there may be a difference in the later m37 transmissions.
