The ammeter is not voltage sensitive, only current (amperes) sensitive, as long as it is hooked up correctly as for ground potential it will read correctly wether 6 or 12 volt. The only glitch is if the truck was positive ground then changed to negative ground, the two leads on the ammeter need to be reversed then it will read correctly, also the original ammeter is rated at 30 amps so it maqy 'peg' out if the charging system is required to send more than 30 amps through the system, this will not hurt the guage.
