Glad to hear the UBC is accounting for the greater weakness of "modern" wood (why they ever allowed hemlock for structure purposes is beyond me), but it sounds to me like they just reduced the allowable spans for the standard commercial grades, but still did not provide any incentive for the timber growers and mills to produce better, stronger lumber. In fact, the UBC does just the opposite: since the lumber is assumed to be weak and the builder must buy it by volume anyway, why should anyone pay for better stuff?

Interesting info about the siesmic codes requiring a WCLB stamp. I had not heard that before.

I have mixed feelings about the codes' requirement for graded lumber. I understand they need simple definite rules for the mass-produced tract houses that most people live in, but the other side of it is that building inspectors generally won't permit a man to build his own house out of his own lumber that he milled himself, even if it's all full-dimension (i.e. 2"x6" rather than 1-5/8" x 5-1/2") clear tight-grained heartwood, simply because it doesn't have that grading stamp on it.
