Were there any other wires attached to the coil terminal you hooked the hot jumper to? If so, you should have disconnected them first, If there were no wires hooked to the terminal and just your jumper lead, the condenser inside the distributor is either shorted out or the system was still positive ground. The third thing is that the coil may have an internal short from the primary to ground. All this aside it would be best to get a new condenser, points and coil of the correct voltage you are going to run. (ie: 6v or 12v) If you applied 12v to a 6v coil it probably shorted immediately internally and caused the wire to overheat. And if you did have it isolated (no other existing wires hooked up) it is most likely that no damage to the other wiring has occurred. Did the wire from the coil to the distributor get hot also? if not then the coil is bad. It is difficult when troubleshooting when the original specs are unknown! I hope this helps you find the exact problem and you can get it fixed easily!
