As a native Californian, I represent that remark!!! Ya pissed me off and now you have to listen to me.
What alot of folks don't realize is that softwood and some hardwood is completely sustainable in this country; What that means is that it will grow to harvestable maturity in 30 years. As long as this growing cycle is respected, there is no problem. Wood is the ONLY sustainable natural resources industry, and the only truly sustainable product going.
The confusion of the consumer came out of the era of Michael Milken's junk bond fiasco in the 80s and the takeover of Pacific Lumber by...Charles Herwitz. Sensitized the whole country. Wanted to strip-mine the well managed forests of Pacific Lumber, a family company that had managed the forests well for decades. 'Course the redwood grows slow, not like the Fir, and they wanted to cut 500 year old trees in certain untouched areas. All that those paper pushers wanted to do was cut all the trees and maximize their profits. Hell, THEY never even WENT into a forest. All the real boys in the forest, the loggers from families of multi generational loggers, knew this was bad stuff. They had never overharvested. But they were worried for their jobs. Meanwhile the conservationalists are getting into the act saying 'hey, we are not on opposing sides' to the loggers. The loggers actually had more in common with the conservationalists, who LOVED the forests. Hell, the conservationalists were even hoisting themselves up in trees to LIVE in the redwoods!
Big fiasco. Made everyone sensitive about cutting ANY wood.
And there's the big boys in their offices on Wall street, looking for the fastest buck, soon to move on to something else... and they have. ( Real estate)
What does this tell us? Loggers? Not bad guys. Environmentalists? Not bad. Consumers? Not bad. We all have our needs, and we are all responsible. But we all have our desires too and want big profits from our investments, so the corporatios beat their slaves to find new ways to make money. And there we have it.
I do not have those investments, and we should all look at divesting in these corporations that rip off the forests, but in the mean time what do we do?
We talk to others, spread the word. This kind of greed is not OK and affects us all, from the logger (a noble profession) to the broker on wall sreeet. Let's get it right and fix it for good this time. No more wild greed and no more reckless use of our resources. Fair pay to all, and fair return to investors, not wild profits. We can all see that' what affects one of us affects all of us'.
I'm a woodworker and use a fair ammount of wood in my work. I believe in the logger, I believe in the owner, and I believe in conservation, but I also believe in good behavior.
Yea.
