Yes, they are cast. Mine are cast iron, but I have seen earlier ones that were cast in brass. I have had some that were bent really bad, so they appear that they did not break real easy. The license plate bracket, that is rivited to the cast bracket, and also acts as the light housing mount, usually took most of the abuse. Mu captured nuts were nearly pulled out of the stake pocket on the drivers side of my truck.
