Clutch use is optional on non-synchros, depending on the driver's skill level. And, once you learn to drive that way (matching engine and tranny speeds 'manually') you'll never wear out a clutch again. AAND, if you drive that way and still use the clutch, your synchros will last forever too. But synchros won't last long if you try to use them for matching speeds with the torque load of a 6,000 pound truck on them. They are only meant to take the momentum of the gears. Learn on a 'solid gear' box.
