I am familiar with sipes to extend the life of tread depth back in the old days. Some used hacksaws, others used the old white gas plow torches with preheated soldering irons to burn in new groves. I prefer put the old fashioned chains installed before I get into trouble on the old logging trails, before I get stuck. Rather safe than sorry. Chains are diffulcult and time consuming after you're stuck in mud, snow, or ice as you enter an ice covered swamp hole in the middle of the trail.
