If there's any logic to it, maybe "x" as in 4x4 or 4x2 or 6x6 means it refers to the number of drive hubs, whereas "N-wheeler" just means it has N actual wheels. I read that they're experimenting with super singles on some of the "18-wheelers" these days. Will they then become "10-wheelers"?
