The cast iron cased four speed hydramatic is in no way weaker than anything in a FFPW driveline. These were put to use in 2.5 ton 6x6s and light tanks amongst other things. Simply hard to hurt as long as they have oil in them and the line pressure governor linkage is hooked up.

The 4-speed Hydramatic transmission is not related to the later turbo-hydramatics, it is an entirely different transmission.

No torque converter, just a fluid coupling. First gear is low for an auto, 4th is direct.

I have one behind a Pontiac 370. It was called a DualRange Hydramatic.
