Historical question

I often see sales literature offered for sale that promoted the larger Dodge trucks from the '40's and 50's. Some of them are shown as tractors for semi-trailers.

Most of these, I think, had flathead 6's. How did they accomplish air braking? Why do we not ever see old FH6's from scrapped trucks with air compressors on them?

Just wondering.
