No, he was assigned to the Medic Squad and was actually on vacation but working a 48 hr. shift over Christmas eve and Christmas day for two other medics. He hit an icy patch caused by frozen fog, lost control and was ejected from the vehicle. He was a career firefighter for Des Moines and also served as a volunteer firefighter in the suberb of Indianola, Iowa.He had also served his country in the Marine Corps
