Got it taken care of!!!
God felt sorry for me and helped me find an excellent 1/2 inch drill bit that cut metal like crazy!! (Spiraled off metal shavings like a pro!!) Also found another one (1 inch?) that I was able to ride perfectly on the pilot bushing to finish up the hole.
Test fit everything and was able to spin the tranny by the output shaft with it in 4th gear with it attached to the motor (no clutch obviously) - no dragging and plenty of depth! (Ended up going about 1.6 inches deep)
