One of the coils in the regulator is a 'cut-out' relay, it shuts off the generator when the idle is so low that the fields would use up more power than the gen would put out.

How is the idle speed?

If you do have a later model, one of the more common charging problems is the regulator-to-ground. Fix it by using a star washer under the regular, between can and firewall. Or, run a ground lead from there to the alternator.
