MY dad's cousin, who grew up with him in North Platte, was there on the U.S.S. California. He was blown off the ship with an explosion, but survived. With all the chaos, his family got a telegram that he was KIA. THey had the wake and all, and then a few days later got the joyous news he was alive.
He went on to be an officer and pilot in the Navy.
