Dave,
If you used white oak or redwood, you would probably be dead before they rotted out. If you want to keep it more "original" than with plastic or rubber.
My 52 was partially dissasembeled when I got it, but it had 3 of the original white oak blocks, still solid.
Red oak is not nearly as rot resistant.
