They say that the small ones are as dangerous if not more than the large.
Something to do with modulating the amount of venom. I have never seen one myself over six foot (alive), but I remember seeing a skin of one much larger than the one pictured. I have eaten many rattlers though.
Garlic and vermouth saute are the way to go.
