Your symptoms are mixed up? Less detonation usually means more low speed power...unless you are waaaay off? Are you using a timing light? Or, are you moving it waaay to much? Start at about 2 deg adv, move it cautiously in 2 degree intervals. Flat heads seem to be able to ping if retarded more than L-heads do. Aaaand, the distributor may be curved for 60 octane gas, and might need more centrifugal for optimum power. Is the centrifugal advance froze up? Check by trying to turn the rotor back and forth by hand, it should move freely, with some spring tension in one direction. Vacuum advance operation sounds normal, time it with the line un hooked and plugged.
