The manuals for new 4 wheel drive vehicles earlier on ('50s, '60s and '70s) suggested engaging the hubs occasionally while driving the vehicle so the lubricant would remain active. This is still a good idea, as I suspect 95% of people who own a 4 wheel drive don't use that feature frequently enough to prevent the grease from getting too stiff.
