The trouble with wood burning as a source of heat, compared to every other way of heating a house, is it requires a little bit of intelligence on the part of the wood-stove operator. A few people get stoves that are way too big for their house, and then choke the air way down, and they produce as much smoke from one stove as dozens of neighbors with stoves correctly sized to their houses. The other thing they do wrong is they either burn green wood because they waited till October to get their wood, or wet wood because they stack it up along side the house with no tarp over it. Wet wood plus not enough air, is a sure way to make more smoke than heat. It only takes a couple idiots doing that to smoke up the whole town.

When I lived in Everett I burned whatever wood I could get for free close to my house. When there was a "burn ban" in effect, I just made sure to burn only my driest wood and to give it plenty of air. If I did that, there was no visible smoke so I figured nobody would report me to the DEQ.
