Vietnam was not lost; at present it is a viable country with a working economy and a decent opportunity for a progressive future. It was economics that 'won' the Vietnam war, however. There is nothing they covet so much as the $US, and they have shunned French for English as the desired second language. There is a lesson to be learned here - patience and long-term constructive policies, access to markets, and related economic tools can work when applied with the correct intent.

As far as 'fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here', nothing but hollow rhetoric. Didn't work for England or Spain, both who are fighting and who have been attacked since 9/11, and it won't work for us. As far as removing terrorists' training grounds, look in the mirror, in Canada, in Mexico, in Brazil, anywhere there is dirt. Eliminating terrorists is like eliminating religion (maybe getting too close to the truth here) or an idea - it is too nebulous, too shifty, too much tied to oppression and fear and poverty, and the means necessary (economic, primarily) require too much sacrifice on the part of those (first world countries) who must 'give' to make it work.

Doesn't matter in the long run, anyway. Build trucks, burn gas, log the hillsides; world population doubles every 40 years, so we're soon to go the way of the dinosaurs, masters of our own demise.

I thought this was a Power Wagon forum!
