In the mid-30's Ford started turning out cars and trucks with the Marmon-Herrington 4WD system as an option and used it up through the 50's. Dodge, IH, Ford, Chevy and GMC all had 4x4 trucks before WW2 and afterwards. Willys started lying about their claim to jeep during WW2 and every company that has 'owned' the jeep name has continued this fine corporate tradition since then; now they are claiming the SUV as well. The Japanese had a 4x4 jeep type vehicle in 1935 and 4x4 vehicles go back to WW1 or earlier in this country so the claim of being the first will always be hazy.
