the last year the dana 70 was used by dodge in the W300 was 1974, it was also used in a precious few W200's. all of the dana 70's were closed knuckle, and all were drum brake.

1975 marked the first year of the dana 60 in dodge, and it was an open knuckle unit, fitted with disc brakes.

the dana 70 was also used by Inernational Harvester, during approximately the same time period. a difference was that the IH units had spicer type joints in the axles, rather than the trachta (nearly constant velocity) joints used in the dodge. they also were drum brake, although a different drum brake than the dodge had. IH used the dana 70 in their one ton, and in a few larger trucks (loadstar 1600 4x4 with light duty axle...).

dana 70 shafts are larger than dana 60 shafts.

the jeep 5/4 truck had dana 60's with dana 70 wheel end parts. that info as per dana engineering. it is a pretty good axle, also.

dana 70's can be found, but not easily. ray suiter, of helitool, sells a real nice disc conversion for the six stud dana 70, eliminating the problem of the weak dodge drum brake. i imagine, energetic as he is, there will one day be one for the 8 stud axle, also.

you can fit the jeep 5/4 brake to the six stud dana 70, complete from the backing plate out. you could also use the IH brake, but it is harder to find parts for than the dodge, although it is a somewhat better brake than the dodge drum unit.
