Something was wrong with your hydraulic system, in order to heat up like that. My M37 fluid barely warms up with a typical drag it thru a 20' mudhole operation. On my 32' gillnetter, my first one (the second one had 50 gal of oil and 2 direct drive Rexroth pumps) had a mere 2.5 gallon reservoir on top of the Vickers pump which was driven by a couple of V-belts. Despite the "marginality" of the system, I could pull in a 900' gillnet over and over again. when the wind was blowing it would be essentially pulling a 10.5" wide boat that weighs ~20,000 lbs (hopefully 10K more with 10K of red salmon on board!!) backwards, stern first, thru the waves at a couple of knots. The hydraulic oil got warm, but not hot. Like I said, if your hydraulic oil got that hot, I think there was something wrong with your system. Another way to show it: find a winch that shows line pull and drum rpm vs. gal/min and PSI. Multiply all the numbers, convert to common units like hp or kw. fpm*line pull/psi*gpm always comes out to very close to 1.00; like 0.95 or close. OTOH, the same calculation for an electric winch, V*A/psi*gpm = <0.10. Of course for a PTO winch I'm sure it's 0.98 or 0.99. But I daresay you won't have another reader pipe up and say he's ever seen a hydraulic winch get too hot to touch. It's common with electric winches.
