What burns up with hydraulic winches is the power steering pump when using the poorly engineered Milemarker system. A pump running off a PTO has the same efficiency, durability and 100% duty cycle as a PTO winch, and is MUCH safer for a single operator that a PTO winch. The "deadman" property of the return-to-center spool valve can be a life or limb saver, or a equipement saver. Having to jump into the vehicle to turn off a PTO winch could be disastrous.
I have an old 8274 with a burned up 12V motor. I'm thinking about installing it in the rear of my M37 somewhere with a 24V motor since my M37 is my offroad "tow truck", i.e. recovers lesser vehicles and ahs a 10,000 lb Braden AHSU3 with 270' of 7/16" cable.
