{{QUESTION!
My 66 W-200 with a 74 (or so) 318 runs the manifold red HOT on
the passenger side. I have checked for intake leaks, tightened
down the carb bolts (it was loose) and replaced the exh. manifold
gaskets. It still runs red to orange. }}

As the previous post mentioned, it could be a lean condition. However, I would suspect that your manifold heat riser valve is stuck in a closed position. If it moves easily, wire it open and see what happens. The spring could be broken or weak. If it doesn't move, you've found the problem. If it is closed, all the exhaust will have to go through the cross over in the intake. This can also cause a lean situation by heating the intake so much that this dog urine we call gasoline vaporises to fast.

If the heat riser valve is working okay, check your mufflers. If you have single exhaust you may have a blockage in the "Y" pipe. If you have duals, the muffler may have collapsed inside. This will cause a manifold to glow cherry red. With the engine and exhaust cool, get underneath and whack your fist (<---fancy technical term) on the muffler and see if you hear any rattles. If this goes on too long it can burn a valve quickly.
