That sounds like you are talking about Rick Rescorla(sp). If so, I believe he was a platoon leader (1st Lt., I think) during that battle and not a pilot. This was the battle at LZ Baldy. George Forrest was a company commander in the battle that occurred at LZ Xray. Howard K Smith's son also fought at LZ Baldy. The men who fought there were in terrible battles. I might have mixed the LZ's up but I think I have it correct. Real American hero's, all of them. The book and the movie were both very good, IMHO. I survived a couple of close battles but nothing on the magnitude of those two.
