One of the sets of points in the regulator is called the "cut out". It has something to do with not allowing current to flow back into the generator depending on the battery voltage
What happens (in principle) if you open the points further on this coil? I understand that the other points ground out the field circuit so that charging can will happen, so adjusting them closer causes more charging. I just can't figure out what the cutout circuit acutally does.
