Found this while doing a little looking into this subject. The 50w oil does have advantages over most gear oils in that it doesn't have additives that can corrode certain types of yellow metals and the 50w can be operated at higher temps before it starts to break down. For manual transmissions that don't need the protection offered by GL-4 or 5 oils that are designed primarily for hypoid differentials, the oils that carry the MT-1 rating seem to be the best choice just in case there's a question if the GL-4 or 5 oils may attack the soft bushing or thrust washer material.
