That is the manual override switch that I referenced in my post and was also mention by others in this thread. NO brake system should be without it as it allows trailer braking without the pull vehicles brakes being used. It can be used in an emergency situation or to prevent jacknifing.
I would think the reason surge brakes remained popular (are they even legal in some states?) is that they are cheap, but they are so inferior in so many ways to electric brakes, such as adjustability for trailer weight and tow vehicle speed.
I don't know what hooking up the lights has to do with the quality of the brakes, but if you are using a U-Haul type connector instead of a 7-pin, you will have more issues than what brakes to use.
