Hey, if it is working with twice as much lash, how critical is it? Typically, a worn band has 5 turns, specs are 2 3/4, so go hand tright and back off 3 1/2? The point of adjusting the bands is to keep the pistons in the middle of their stroke, otherwise they can travel so far the pistons fall out and blow the o-rings.

But, does your model even have bands? GM's don't, 727's do.

Tranny work is not that difficult. Buy a model specific book off the internet for $15, and have at it. Lots of diagnosis in the books that is not done by shops, they just say "You heed a new one". Pump pressure is read with a gauge in the right external port, other ports will tell about bands, pistons etc. Electronic ones are also in the right books, brainy things are available from net suppliers

Torque convertors go $100, tranny kits go about the same. Took me 6 hours to do my first 727 in my garage, using a drill press and wood blocks as an arbor press. Lots of snap rings....

All you are risking is the boneyard value of the used trannsmission. The question is, do you have enough hair on your ass to try it ?
