Picked up a Poly today

The junk yard that I bought the Poly from finally got around to pulling it today, and I went over to get it. Its out of a 1961 1 1/2 -2 ton farm truck with 34,000 miles on the odo. (no sign of the little old lady who drove it) The engine looks pretty clean, isnt seized up and seems like a good start. The tranny is a 540 5 speed, unfortunatly a direct drive instead of an uverdrive. I may still use it.
Question 1: what is a good manual to get pertaining to this motor?
Question 2: just to the passenger side of the carburator is a little well that looks as if it may have had a cover bolted over it. What was this for?
