I did the very same thing about two years ago. I attritute it to fatigue, I had been sawing all day with a big saw, or at least big to me, a Stihl 460. I recall watching the chain bar moving toward my leg as the chain was slowing and thinking I can't stop it.
I went through the knee of some pretty new pants, which was upsetting, and got into my leg enough to make it bleed quite a bit, but not damage any important, internal parts.
I sat on the porch, pouring hydrogen peroxide on it and applying pressure. It took about 30 minutes to get it to stop bleeding. The dog supervised....
