The GM 4200 inline six has 291 hp and 277 ft pound torque with a flat torque curve due to
the variable valve timing. 90 percent of the
torque is available from 1,600 to 5,800 RPM.
The bore is 3.66", the stroke is 4.01" stroke, bored out like a slant six might have been if Mopar had done thin wall castings. The 4.2 is a long stroke motor that builds good low end torque.

You can see the motor is skinny on the bottom, wide at the top. It ought to be
relatively easy to swap the 4200 in older
vehicles, provided the length is OK.

Other than SUVs, the 4.2 (256 cubic inch) is not offered in the new GM compact trucks, but I think it should be. I think the five and the four versions lack the 4.2's sophisticated variable valve timing. The 4.2 has 10:1 compression ratio and 4 valves per cylinder.

The 4.2 is part of a modular GM motor familiy which includes the 3.5 and the 2.8 with most internal components the same on each series. The full size GM trucks do not use these motors.

Now that Delphi is in Chapter 11, I hope that
the Chinese don't buy Delphi. This is a
very bad turn of events for the US auto
industry.
